“This means that kids in this community and across Staten Island will feel like they’re playing in the big leagues,” said his father, Prince’s Bay resident Joseph Verdino Sr. “My son’s passion was baseball, and through this field, his memory will last forever.”
Costs for the project, which calls for a stadium-style facility to be erected on the grounds of the Little League that would serve as the league’s premier field, are estimated at between $1.5 million and $2 million.
Major contributions by three local elected officials, however, have more than halved what’s needed.
“Joseph always lifted the spirits of his family, friends, and neighbors,” said Ignizio. “In Joseph’s life, all who came in contact with him were greatly inspired and emotionally touched. I’m proud that our community is coming together for this honorable initiative.”
In addition to having the field bear his name, there will also be a seven-foot bronze statue of the late ballplayer swinging a bat. It will be designed by local artist Gregory Perillo and erected in front of the main entrance.
Among the loads of support offered for the cause, Verdino singled out John Calabrese, who sits on the board of directors, as a major driving force behind the project.
“Joseph [Sr.] has been a friend of mine for over 10 years,” said Calabrese. “I really never got to know his son, but after all of what has happened, I got sucked in spiritually. This whole thing is good for the Verdino family and for the kids of Staten Island as a whole.”
